animal communicator part two

Ok, you are going to start thinking I'm the crazy cat lady here - and maybe I am - and maybe I'm ok with that - but still.  You are going to like this one.

The other day we went to Target and bought a remote controlled mouse for the crew.  We've tried battery powered toys before and they always look at us like we are crazy.  They know their natural prey isn't supposed to make noise (according to some it is supposed to lay in a basket in the corner of the room and smell like cat nip, but that's a different post)

Well this toy was a hit.  Unfortunately the toy broke pretty quickly.  The front wheel fell off it's axis, and as a result it doesn't move very well. The crew doesn't seem to mind because they like the fur it is covered in, and it moved once, so it must still be a toy.

After they gave up and went for their dinner, I picked it up and put it on the counter (which they aren't supposed to go on, but they do) and went down stairs to exercise.  While I was exercising I heard a few suspicious bumps and a clang, that sounded very much like mouse making it's way (with a great deal of help) off the island across the floor, and dropping through the railing and down the stairs.  I didn't stop exercising figuring I'd nab it on the way up.  Well when I was done there was nothing on the stairs. I glanced around the room and didn't see it, so I gave up and went upstairs.  Later that night I had some of the cats in the room and I told DH what happened, and threw a comment out to the crew that if they could return the mouse that would be very helpful.

Well the next morning it still didn't show up.  So before they ate breakfast I very pointedly told them that I would like the mouse returned.  I pictured the mouse being in the kitchen, and asked them to help me out.

Wouldn't you know it, when I came home from work.. the mouse was in the kitchen, pretty much where I was standing when I made the declaration.  Just sitting there like it had run around exploring the house and returned on it's own.

Go ahead.  Tell me I'm crazy..

:)

Raw food study

I feed my crew raw food. I tried to find a low carb high protein canned food that wasn't break the bank expensive and didn't contain fruits and vegetables and didn't contain garlic, and I was left with little options, most of them bank breaking.

So I started making my own through the recipe at CatInfo.org and did that for several years, and then started buying commercial raw. I woud prefer to make my own, but I just don't have the stomach to grind up 50+lbs of chicken parts each month. (the curse of having seven cats)

Vets for the most part, are unsupportive of raw. But a new study might just change all that.

A girl can hope!

wild and crazy chippies

Remember the post from the other day about the chipmunks on the porch? well this time I found those two chipmunks under the deck near the foster kitten room. They were sitting on a discarded litter box and some urine soaked linolium near a few bags of used cat litter. they were rubbing around on the linolium and pretty much acting like they were teenage rebels.

they didn't care when I walked past the window. They didn't care when I walked past a closer window. they didn't care when I tapped on the window, and they didn't care when I rattled the door knob. They did show some concern when I started to open the door, but they didn't go that far (and I didn't open the door that far).

Silly Chippies..

Happy Mommy Day,

For years, my kitties didn't realize about the human holiday called "mother's day" well a couple of years ago we explained it to them (we don't have human children to teach them) and since them I've gotten Mother's Day gifts.

This year I got a pair of shoes I have been hinting horribly to my DH, and the following note:

Happy Mommy Day,

To the best kitty mommy in the world that there was EVER.
We love you,
Ollie
Muffin
Jack
Eli
Tweedle
Kit
(flip page over)
And me too! I'm Fleurp. They didn't want me to sign it cause I'm little and cute and they are all jealous and everything and I love you more than them and I wont let them stop me and and...

Made me smile. That is soooo Fleurp.

FIP

Long time readers and friends will know that I have had a past experience with FIP and I absolutely hate the disease with a passion. I hate that in 2008 we not only don't have a 100% accurate test for it, we don't have a cure, we don't have a vaccine, we don't even know why it happens (although it is thought to be something genetic that helps with the mutation)

There is research being done out there.

I ran across this website today. Just thought I'd spread the word.

I feel like the kitty whisperer

It is Festivus at work (our little gathering with food and not working) and I was asked to bring kittens. I wanted to bring Happiness and Joy, but Happy is still pretty sick, and I didn't want to stress her out, so I brought Wes and Fleurp.

Well they have the whole office to run around in and Weslee is at my feet playing with my ankles and hands, and Fleurp is on my chair with me..

so many places to investigate, so many things to play with and chew on and attack.. and they are here with me.

awww.

space assassin kittens

no.. seriously. I had a dream last night. I was in space. I needed some help fighting a battle of some sort, so I ended up in a place where I could get assassin kitties. no.. really. There were two different sets to pick from. One was a group of younsters, the other was a mother with kittens. I think I was leaning toward the mother, thinking she'd be more protective, and worst case, I'd have kittens.

Then I woke up.

don't ask. just enjoy the visual. Ninja type kitties, but real kitties. in space :)

yes, I'm weird.

I brought the kittens to work today. They are being very good. the bulk of them are on my boss' desk. I have Googley Bear here and she's chewing my elbow at the moment. She's so freakin cute. I wonder if they aren't some mutant dwarf kittens since they are so very very small. at six weeks this kitten isn't any bigger than a CD when she's all curled up. But they are healthy.. *shrug* we'll see what happens!

addendum

I feel the need to post this..

I feel I am becoming (or is it too late for me) the crazy cat lady, who is looking for the highest standards of care for each and every cat, and feel that I might come across and condeming those who don't "measure up"

Well in a way I guess I kinda am/do but in the same way that I feel that we all should be eating fresh veggies, and fruits and restrict highly processed foods, alcohols, smoking, etc. Do I think any less of anyone who eats a donut? no. It is completely understandable.

I have absolutely NO intention of being condeming to those who care of their cat is not the same as mine. I know there are people who do more and better things for their cats, and I know there are going to be people who don't care at all - no wait. those I am going to pelt with pixilated stones. If you are going to own a pet, care for it.

Just as I am always looking out for new ideas, suggestions, ways to care for cats, I guess I don't censor myself when it comes to ways I care for my own kitties and fosters. I'm not always right, and I know it - just not at the time apparently.

as long as the cat is in good health, loved, safe, and sees a vet when necessary, you are A-OK in my book! (even if you do feed dry :D)

You May Be The Perfect Cat Owner If You...

You May Be The Perfect Cat Owner If You...
(From the American Humane Association)

Believe caring for a pet for 15 years does not seem like a lifetime
Look forward to having your ankles rubbed dry by an affectionate, hairy animal
Don't mind sharing your house with someone who sheds, tracks kitty litter, and throws up hairballs
Don't mind sharing your house with someone who will never clean up after themselves
Love a housemate who will randomly and regularly entertain you with outrageous and silly antics (at their whim, not yours)
Want to take care of someone every day
Like your lap warmed whenever you sit down
Would like to spend your extra money on pet food, toys, veterinary care, kitty litter; and more kitty litter
Want to be welcomed with a soft purr of appreciation
Believe that spaying and neutering pets will help solve the pet overpopulation problem
Can't imagine leaving your devoted pet behind when you move
Want to keep an ID tag on your pets, so they can get back to you no matter what
Enjoy unconditional love and constant companionship
Believe that keeping your cat indoors is for your pet's well being

Stolen from here

Although there are a few more crevats from me, but I think I'll refrain from posting them :)

the more people I meet...

I swear.. I hate "people". I was just browsing craigslist.org, and someone wants to rehome their beautiful flame point cat because their three year old wont stop chasing it.

Um.. HELLO! teach your child MANNERS!! put up gates so the cat has a room or two to escape to.. maybe like the master bedroom - oh wait.. you apparently spoil this child so much that you let it have the master bedroom..

Things like this just make me want to vomit.. preferably all over the people.

I can only hope there truely is more to this story and there is a valid reason why they don't control the child, and/or provide escape routes for the cats on the off chance the child gets out of hand..

rant

well, I haven't used this blog as a platform before (feel free to correct me if I am wrong)

On another board I frequent, I ran across a post about a woman seeing an injured cat in a busy area (aka not outside someone's home) and how she had seen it several days in a row and felt compelled to help it, and was asking for advice about catching it.

Well OMG.. I just wanted to slap people.. some said that the cat was fine, that she should not capture it but leave it where it is because it would be PTS if she brought it anywhere, some said that the cat was probably owned, and she should check around to make sure it wasn't a beloved pet before trying to do anything to it (Um, it has been injured for days - even if it is owned, it is NOT a beloved pet by any stretch of the imagination) Some tried to convince her the cat was fine, despite the OP saying the cat was obviously injured.

Look, I love cats. Now I'm sure there are people out there more cat crazy than I am, but I'm sure there aren't that many.

however, having had my hand in rescue, I know you can't save them all, and a lot of the time the most humane thing to do is to capture and PTS. If you can capture, rescue, fix, and find a great home for it - all the better, but there are thousands of wonderfully friendly cats in shelters that don't need to be fixed, and they need homes too.

I hate it when people who have no idea of the severity of the problem making comments about how wrong people are to try to help.

In reply to the comment

I'm sorry I can't address you by name, as I want to thank you for your comment.

As this is text, I want to make sure you know that I honestly appreciate your comment. It helped. Going through Em's illness, I find I am forgetting all the advice I've ever learned about care of ill pets. When Em had her first nose bleed, I wanted to rush her in to the vet - even though he was closed. I called my friend - who owns six cats and who works for my vet - and she calmed me down and reminded me that as long as she has input and output it could probably wait. She's been a sanity saver on several other points as well.

I spent a year and a half working for a vet, and I have seen owners keep their pets around way longer than they should have. I am doing my best to make sure I don't do that. It is so hard on me because I feel bad keeping her around knowing that she's only going to get worse, and going to continue to suffer bad spells. But then I see her joy over going outside, or getting treats, and I see that spark of life and get the feeling she is not ready yet, and I think if I force her to leave too soon, I'd be doing that for me. It is such a fine line - one I agonize over every day. Hearing your story helps me keep things in perspective, and I do appreciate it.

Now that you have mentioned your story, I can see that the "thing" she was probably asking for was help with what she was suffering through. I couldn't do anything at the time but up her prenisolone and hope that helped. Breathing issues are so scary.. Fortunately after 2 doses, she cleared up nicely and is back to where she was. She's back to begging for treats and wanting to go outside. With the vet's very recent exam of her and stating she was doing very well, I think we have some time left, and it was the eye drops that caused this latest episode.

I take each episode very seriously, and I think if they start coming faster or lasting longer than a day, I'll need to schedule with Dr. Brion for her crossing. It is all paid for, and he's agreed to come out to the house..

I hope this doesn't come across as me trying to justify things.. but just a deeper explanation.. and a thank you for your comment.

And finally my deepest condolences for your loss. While you didn't get a proper goodbye, I am sure your kitty knew.

decisions

Not that kind... See, with Em's blood sugars all over the map, I need to buy more test strips. I get them off ebay.. the more you buy, the cheaper you can get it..

The question for me is, how much am I willing to invest in her future?

when I worked at the grocery store as a cashier, I knew this nice old woman who used to joke with me about not buying green bananas..

i feel a lot like that.

I know I could always sell any left overs on Ebay if perchance I stocked up and they outlasted her, but I can't help but wonder if I bought a ton, if I would be jinxing myself...

*sigh* Anyone have any freestyle test strips laying around they want to donate to the cause?
