Black Cat Appreciation Day

Years ago animals who went into the shelter had a worse than a 50/50 shot of getting out. Black cats and dogs had a far worse time of it. Thankfully the word has gotten out that black cats aren't bad luck, and the stats no longer say that black cats are more likely to die than others in a shelter.

But cats are still dying in shelters.. black, white, tabby, tortie.. they are all dying. I think instead of highlighting 'black cats' we should be highlighting the awesome cats that end up at the shelter. They are not broken or damaged or nonredeemable.. okay some are broken and some are damaged, but all of them are awesome. Some of the best relationships I have had with cats were the ones that needed more from me than a 'normal healthy cat'.  Out of the 370 fosters I have had I remember the ones who had serious health issues more keenly. My time taking care of Em after she became diabetic brought us closer.

So take another look at the black cat (little black cats go with everything you know) or the diabetic, or the three legged cat.. because money can buy you love when you use it for an adoption fee.

And, as it just so happens, I happen to have three wonderful friendly happy, purring cuddly black kittens that are going back to the shelter for adoption on Thursday.. so lets get to the appreciatin..

Cats just like these, or like your own, are dying because people do not understand how awesome shelter kitties are, so tell us about your experience with a rescue kitty.

  1. They are beautiful! And I think somehow you broke the rule about black cats being hard to photograph, because you've made all these kittens look so awesome!

Experience with a rescue kitty?! Ha! How often does Binga get featured on my blog, stealing my thunder and photo bombing? There is usually one or two stories about her every week! And sometimes Boodie sneaks in too - both of course are rescue cats.

  2. We are ALL rescues and "returns"! There's a reason why Daddy isn't allowed to go to the vet's office any longer...he comes home with double the cats he left with!

  3. All of us were "rescued" from the streets. Well, Coco and Felix weren't really from the streets as they were born at our porch but their Mama, Meow-Me was. Tutu was "rescued" from the dumpster and sent to me for fostering. Her original rescuer didn't want her because she said she wasn't "pretty" and looked like a dirty cat. All I can say is, thank you for rescuing Tutu and sending her to me because Tutu is beautiful and a very special girl who is much loved today, like all her brofurs and sisfurs.

  4. We're all rescue kitties, and Ashton is classified as a less-adoptable rescue kitty with her one eye. Rescue kitties, especially the "less adoptable" ones, make great pets, and we tell that to everyone who will listen.

  5. Cats are awesome. Personally I find myself drawn to special needs cats. They have so much love to give and the bond you develop with them while caring for them grows very deep.

  6. I'm so glad that black cats don't have as hard of a time, but all shelter cats are in trouble like you said. We've only had rescue cats at our house including the two here now. They definitely make great pets and it means saving a life!

  8. I am a rescue cat and so were all the angels who came before ...
Our paws are crossed that those cute little ones find special forever homes very soon.
    Purrs ... Rainbow

  9. yeah! Black cats rule! We were just on our way to the shelter to pull 3 kittens but another rescue beat us to it. Thankfully, people like you are working every day to save by fostering and adopting. All our cats are rescues and they couldn't be more awesome.

  10. Black cats are AWESOME. My parents' had a one eyed black cat who adopted them (decided to live in our garden) and he had the most personality of any cat I have ever met I think!
Love this post and the fab pics of those gorgeous kittens! :)

  11. Those kittens of yours are gorgeous! My first cat growing up was a black cat. Loved her to death. Who am I kidding - I've loved ALL cats (all of whom have been adopted) to death!

  12. Black cats are the best! They are very precise in shape because of all the black fur. When a black cat lies on a carpet, you see the entire little beastie. When a siamese lies on the same carpet, you see black feet, tail, ears. Black cats look extremely dapper in white, blue, orange, or red bows. Black cats have luminous eyes. Black cats feets look like teddy bear feets. I luvs black cats!
