Rupert vs the long goodbye

I received a few good reports from the shelter about Rupert so I was hopeful that he would be returning to us to put on weight. I sent a text asking if I might get him back only to find out he took a turn for the worse and things were not looking good.

I have not heard a further update, but I am assuming that he did not make it. It breaks my heart that we could not save him, but I had a chance to love him and we were both the better for it.

It was very apparent he enjoyed his last few days. He bothered the repairman that stopped by the house he was in, he pushed the resident cats out of their bowls so he could have a single bite of their food. He thundered down the stairs and he even helped himself to whatever he wanted in the fridge (shhh she doesn't know I'm sharing this photo with you). He was always a very happy loving boy.

If by some miracle he is still alive and responds to whatever treatment they might have devised for him and I hear more I will share it with you, but I am guessing that is highly unlikely.

  2. He's a heartbreaker. So much enthusiasm ... so much life ... so much personality and heart ... the world is a sadder place without him in it. I hope he's still hanging on, though I know that's just wishful thinking.

  3. I'm SO sorry! And sad too. Rupert really had so much life in him - his spirit thrived even if his body didn't.

(Still purring he hasn't left us.)

  5. Still hoping there would be a miracle for this determined little soul, he is so precious. I knew his chances were not good being his organs were affected, but I have learned never to give up from having my own miracle girl Ms. Phoebe who lived for 13 1/2 years despite being given a prognosis of a few years at age 3. Please do let us know either way what you hear about him, I would like to continue to have hope.

  6. It's these times where I am in awe of your strength and dedication. Your vast knowledge is only exceeded by the size of your heart and compassion. While I'm feeling hard hit by the news about sweet Rupert, bursting into tears at the mere thought of him despite the fact I never even met him. I always thought I had a special cat gene that made me fall for them deeper and, but you make me look like a casual observer. I talk the talk, but you walk the walk, and that makes you an incredibly special human being. I learn so much from you through your posts, and our pm chats- always grateful for your willingness to share your knowledge.
I'm continuing to say prayers for Rupert, and send him positive and healing energies despite the grim outlook. My praying for a miracle. But I'm also sending gentle hugs, positive thoughts and love to you and your cat man. Your love for Rupert was evident to all of us the very first moment we witnessed it.

  10. I'm so sorry. I used to think the "at least he had safety and love at the end" were just comfort words but I've recently learned that safety and love at the end are a big deal! Thank you for being part of that.

  13. heartbreaking....this is definitely the worst part of fostering...you do everything you can and sometimes it just isn't enough.

    1. I fear that there is no point. Since I haven't heard one way or the other I don't know, but he has had such a hard time, I am surprised he was still alive as long as he was.

  31. I had just written someone, remarking that though we think of cats being with us a long time or a short time, I don't think they look at their lives like that. I believe they think of 'good time' and 'bad time'. A few weeks of good times can erase a lifetime of bad for cats. If Rupert enjoyed his days with you, then he was enjoying life. I hope he has the chance to enjoy still more of it.
