National Static Electricity Day

Apparently today is National Static Electricity Day. Normally that would seem like a very odd thing to celebrate on a cat blog, as most cats really really hate static and take it as a personal affront when you zap them.

But not Eli.

Static was always the one thing Eli has loved enough to put up with us for. Even when he didn't trust us not to kill him, he would allow us to touch him during the static season.  There have been many a night where we will sit there and pat him hard enough and fast enough to generate sparks within his fur. It really is a sight to behold - a bit like when you were at sleep away camp and you would crush wintergreen lifesavers for the sparks only there are so many sparks it is a bit like fireflies... one of these days I am going to capture it on video..

Now that Eli has more or less accepted that we aren't trying to kill him, he has become much more vocal in his demand for static. It starts around labor day when the days start to become noticeably shorter and lasts right through the winter. He will come within arms reach and screams at us in his squeaky voice. It is sad when he expects static and there is none to be had because static season hasn't started yet.  But since we are in full swing of it today, I spent a little extra time giving him what he loves.

  4. That is so funny! I have been a bit staticky lately, but for me, that's not a good thing because it makes my fur look crappy for cat shows. When we were in Tucson, my human had to work extra hard to keep out the static from my fur!

  6. Eli, you are a furry interesting kitty! We're not a fan of static but if it brought you closer to your beans we thinks it is a good thing.

  8. How incredibly interesting! Rolz is our only static cat. It's so weird to pet him in bed at night and give him a shock. But it's his favorite place to be pet! Purrs from Deb and the Zee/Zoey kitties

  10. That's too funny! We don't have any static lovers, but none of my gang seems to mind it too much. I'd love to see a video of Eli the Static Cat in action!!

  11. Usually it's my cats who give me static! Why on Earth is there a day for static electricity?
