My Unrequited Loves

Yes, Bowie and Crema are back. Previously I called them The Boy and The Girl but now I'm calling them Ash and Abigail.

They were adopted out by the shelter as "Spirit Cats" but the family that adopted them weren't quite ready for their nature. I give them immense amounts of credit for trying as hard and as long as they did but there were kids involved and I respect the decisions they made.

They were comfortable in the house, but still not comfortable with me. I tried harder and harder to make friends with them but I realized that was just making things worse so I started ignoring them. I show up, I give them treats, the wand toy gets waved around a bit..

and despite the looks I often get, as long as the grabby hands stay reigned in they are okay with me.

I love them so much.. even the looks they give me, even the snarling at me when I dare to offer treats a little too closely.. my heart aches to hold them and give them a good huffing.. but alas, that is not to be.

I thought I had a good placement for them, but it didn't work out, so these two are looking for someone who has it in their heart to hang out with a couple of really adorable kittens who like deli meat and do kinda want to be around you but have some serious PTSD when it comes to hands and towels.

  2. They are so beautiful! Basically, they need a family where they'll get fed, watered and treats when they want them, a bit of play time and left alone the rest of the time. Purrs they find that home soon.

  3. What a stunning pair! I bet it is really difficult to keep a distance from them. I hope they find the right (for them) home soon.

  4. Now I remember these two sweeties. I'm so sorry they didn't work out with their adoptive family but I am glad they are back with you, safe and sound. I do hope they find the perfect person who totally understands them.

  5. I wish we could explain things to them. They are too adorable not to be cuddled and hugged - but hopefully some one will give them the time and patience they need. I'm by no means an expert, but my take is that when they come around (notice WHEN not if), the connection will be strong and swift and unwavering - a true gift of their hearts.

  6. Having been one of those adopters who tried for months to integrate a kitty into our home, yet in the end returned her to the rescue, I feel this pain. I was devastated; a cat lover who was returning a cat! She ended up adopted as a single kitty, and is living the life of a princess.
The rescue that I work with has found some of their adopted cats dumped or 'gifted' to others; they'd rather the cats come back, so they can place them depending on their temperament. It's a very hard thing.

  8. By their expressions, at least you know they WANT to be touched, even if they can't actually do it.

I have always understood when an adopter needed to return a cat they'd adopted. Even before I began fostering for shelters and rescues, my personal adoptions always had a no-judgement return guarantee for the many reasons people honestly have to just can't keep the cat they'd adopted. It's better for all, all around.
