The ups and downs of Abby

I know this photo is a little blurry, but I like her expression so much
We are still having difficulties with Abby's glucose levels.  Sometimes she goes up when she should be going down, and other times she goes down when she should be going up.  It is enough to drive me a little insane until I reminded myself that while it isn't ideal that her sugars are high, they aren't so high that we aren't doing good here.

I am not sure what is going on, but over the weekend she ate less than she had been and I was starting to get worried about her. I peeked in her mouth, which she was none too happy about, and I saw quite a bit of tartar on the small amount of her mouth I was able to see, so I sent an email into the shelter asking if they might want to consider getting her in to the vet for a once over and a possible dental.

Don't worry about her eating less.. she then hurled up a hairball and was back to eating her normal amount. I'm not surprised at all about the hairball as she is still shedding more than I would like, but her fur is starting to look a lot better than it had, so we are doing something right.

I am also seeing more and more normal cat behavior from her.  She is rubbing her chin on things, sniffing me when it is appropriate. She still flinches a bit, but not as much as she used to. I've been using the Spirit Essences Stress Stopper on her, and I'm sure that with some time and my assurances that I won't ever hurt her are starting to sink in.  She is not a 'on your' lap cat, but really is a 'next to your' lap cat. I've been working with her on trust issues by picking her up and holding her and letting her down when ever she asks.  This also helps with communication as it helps her to know that I am listening to what she is telling me and I will react accordingly. Only time will tell

updates:

I went into the shelter on Sunday to get some more supplies for Abby and saw a young couple with a small child in with Chandler. The man was holding him and patting him and getting himself covered with fur.  I stopped in to talk to them to see if they had any questions and they really didn't, but wouldn't it be awesome if our boy sweet talked himself into another home.. That boy has some SERIOUSLY good mojo on him..

Lena was adopted last week. I stopped in to see her and she wasn't there. One of the shelter workers told me that she went home with a friend of a friend and she had already gotten an update and she was doing well.  I wish they would send me an update (my adoption cards all have my email address on them as well as my fb page) but it so rarely happens.

  1. It's really too bad adopters don't keep fosters updated on their kitties very often. :-( But I'm so glad Lena has a home! I'm glad Abby is doing better... I don't know if this might possibly apply to her (and I really hope not), but another blogging kitty went through some wonky diabetic readings and insulin issues and it turned out to be a rare condition that required surgery. Here's the story, in case you want to check it out: http://pepsimaxaddict.blogspot.com/2015/02/feline-acromegaly-treatment.html

    1. thank you for sharing that. Fortunately that isn't what we are dealing with, we are only giving one unit of insulin and we are getting a response, it is just sometimes the response is just not what we were expecting, so I think there is something going on like bad teeth or some other type of illness.

  2. The head peep would have loved to have stayed in contact with the fosters for Newton and Pierre. She met Pierre's foster when she adopted him, and we're sure she would have liked ongoing updates. At least you give them the opportunity to get in contact with updates... or questions.

  5. We so glad Lena found a home. But also a little sad...we sure liked seeing her cute face. We hope you get an update on her.

And we're purring for Abby and hope you can get her glucose under control. If any one can, we know you can. :)

  6. I think most people once they adopt a pet forget about the foster parents which is sad really
