Transporting kittens - pt 1

A month ago there was a plea on Facebook to help a mother kitty and her kittens.  My friend Wendy asked if I knew anyone who could help, so I tagged a few people on the post who I thought who could give her the answers.  Wendy really picked up that ball and ran with it: networking to find a shelter to take them up here and raising funds to help save them.  This beautiful mother and her kittens were slated to die simply because where they were born.

Robin had the knowledge and the contacts.  Joan was local and helped out on that end.  After a lot of back and forth and a lot of fundraising and vetting later, the kitties were ready this past weekend to make the long trek up from Georgia.  They had a layover in Pennsylvania and on Saturday they were on their way to New Hampshire where Wendy was going to pick them up and bring them up to HART in Maine.  She asked if I might like to come along, and I immediately said yes.

I would love to do more of this but A) I'm up in Maine, which generally is the end destination for any transports up this way and to that end the rescues that are taking pets from down south generally have staff who are going to pick them up and B) I am emotionally limited to what I can do.  There are only so many cats on death row I can see before I start to lose it.  I admire Joan so much for being able to go in and save what she can.

With transport to Maine arranged, they also managed to find a place for a couple other families as well, and 14 kitties were saved!

So we drove the hour and a half down to the Mall of New Hampshire.  and met up with the transport.

Getting them out of the cages they were in and getting them into the cages and carriers they were going to next in the parking lot on a 90+ degree day was a little nerve wracking on everyone, but in the end all went very well.  Two families headed to NH, and we headed back to Maine. but first, a drink of water was in order..

and they all settled down for the rest of the journey..  sorta.

are we there YET??
nope, we've got a way to go
*sigh*
zzzzzz
Hey kitties, look, a vineyard!! (Flag Hill Vineyard)
Yeah, impressive..
so this is Maine??

More tomorrow..

  7. This is such a great post and the photos are great and really help tell the awesome story! I have not done any transports before...of course I have thought about it. Your honesty in writing about emotional limits makes me feel like a sane person. Between my own special needs fur kids, fostering the tough ones and working on an animal cruelty unit as a forensic photographer I have my saturation point and yet then feel guilty that I can't look at the death row pictures or do more than I do but I know I do a lot. I know there is a balance and I know better than to get overwhelmed because then I am no good to anyone. It's really uplifting to read you blog and know that you and other people are doing so much good!

  11. Yay to everyone that helped these kitties. Our mom would love to help transport, but we also seem to be the end of the line for many of them.
