Trimming Michaela's nails

When Michaela first arrived here she was high strung and lacked self-esteem and everything freaked her out. Even holding her sent her into a scramble to get down. Yet somehow I was able to trim most of her claws. I would like to boast that it is my awesome skills and kitty-whispering ability but I know it was her willingness to trust me and my going slow that got us through it.

But that was ages ago and claws grow.. so now it was time to do it again. Getting a nail trim past a cat who doesn't want one once is a thing, but could I do it again??

I sat her on my lap and called her a good kitty. I faced her so she could keep an eye on her kittens who were in a milk coma and I worked quickly and was conservative in where I cut so I didn't have to worry about the quick.  Before you knew it, her front paws were done. I thought I'd give her back paws a try and the first paw was easy because I could do it in the same position. I had to move her to get to the other one and she was pretty much over being restrained and she wasn't a fan of being turned around so she couldn't see her kittens. But, I got them done.  Phew!

  1. Yep, the trim is very impawtant, so we're glad you got this done for her. And every time we see her, we are so grateful she's in a good place now, and especially that her babies were born in a safe, healthy environment.

  8. Mom and dad do my nails too, and I hate it. They try tricking me, holding me down, bribing me with food- everything they can think of, but I still hate it!

  9. Good job!! We say it only takes being impaled a couple of times to act as a reminder. :)

  10. I don't do back nails on my cats because I rarely have any issues with their back paws, but like you, I'm usually speedy on the front nails, so I'm usually done before they've noticed or had time to object.
