A poem to my Foster Cat

A Poem to my Foster Cat - edited from a Poem to my Foster Dog by Diane Morgan.

By Diane Morgan

I am the bridge,
Between what was and what can be.
I am the pathway to a new life.

I am made of mush,
Because my heart melted when I saw you,
Matted and sore, limping, depressed,
Lonely, unwanted, afraid to love.

For one little time, you are mine.
I will feed you with my own hand.
I will love you with my whole heart.
I will make you whole.

I am made of steel.
Because when the time comes,
When you are well, and sleek,
When your eyes shine,
And your heart purrs* with joy            *(tail wags)
Then comes the hard part.

I will let you go - not without a tear,
But without a regret.
For you are safe forever -
A new cat* needs me now.                      *(dog)

  1. What a sweet poem.

  2. That was such a beautiful and touching poem. It brought tears to my eyeballs.

  3. Leaky eyes. You should put this poem on the blog home page somewhere, because after 400+ kittens, it's like it was written specifically for you.

  4. What a beautiful poem! Love it and love those sweet pictures!

  5. I LOVE this poem. I've seen it and bits of it other places; nice to see it whole (and credited!!) ;-)

  7. okay who's cutting onions in my office?

  8. That was very heartfelt and poignant.

  9. That is a beautiful poem.

  10. How touching. All of you who foster are very special, and we admire you!

  11. That is beautiful. I am in awe of all of you who foster.

  12. So beautiful... what you give of yourself to these sweet little souls is immeasurable.

  13. From the heart, this is beautiful.

I just completed a 7-week foster in Raleigh NC for Shae and Butter, a bonded pair. I returned them to the adoption center last night in time for their introduction to their new adoptive pet parent(s). Adoption completed tonight. This poem resonates with me.

I really appreciate reading the poem. A friend sent me this link, just fostering my first cat, a stray/abandoned cat. You can tell he had been in some cat fights. Territorial and aggressive. Didn't trust humans very much as he was considered a problem cat. He even went after my cats and my neighbor but after I caught him in a trap. I did my best to try to find the owner to no avail. I took care of him built up trust, you would rub up against my face. I don't think he understood why I had to let him go. To a local cat shelter / sanctuary. I only hope that he has a good chance with the loving family, so we can live out the rest of his years not having to fend for himself and fight for survival. I'm going to miss you Sneaks!
