The birds

The other week my husband noticed a bird building a nest within the underside of our deck that is just outside the kitten room. We had recently enclosed it for a bit of a storage area. Being in Maine we decided to start heating with wood pellets and we need a lot of them to get through the winter. By building a shelter under the deck we protect our wood pellets from the snow and keep them (for the most part) from being visible to the general public.  This year the bird in the above photo built a nest there.

The bird is so interesting. She won't go to the nest if we are looking at her.  How she knew I was looking at her when  I took this photo I have no idea, but she did. She had a meal for her babies but she would not go up and give it to them. She just sat there and kept flipping her tail.

Friday we went outside and noticed that the babies are just about ready to leave the nest.

I see four birds in there. I wonder if there might not be one more in the back because the one to the far right seems to be up a little high. That is an impressive brood to raise even if there are only four. Even more impressive is the fact that they seem to all be bigger than the mom is. It is hard to tell for sure because they were 10 feet up and in a corner and mom was 20-30 feet away chirping at us..

We are hoping they leave the nest soon because they have been making quite a mess.

  5. It's always exciting when they're nearby. We had swallows over our front entrance when I was a kid. We couldn't use the door the whole time the nest was being used. Mom and dad would attack! I had pigeon babies on a balcony once. Fun to watch them grow up. And yes, mess was the word of the day! But so much fun for the kittens.

  6. We have a pigeon that hangs out on our storage shed for a month in the spring and a month in the fall. I named him Fred and he tells me all the "celebirdies" gossip. Having a bit of bird TV is pretty cool! ~Bear Cat

  7. I had a blackbird nesting in my evergreen in the back yard this spring. Unfortunately one of the babies fell out of the nest. I found it dead under the tree. A couple of days later I found an egg, I assume from the same nest, that had not hatched.

I'm sure the kittens are enjoying the view and hopefully the baby birds safely leave the nest.
