10 years ago VCRs were still cool, cameras were still using film, US planned to invade Iraq, the Washington Sniper hadn't been caught, Martha Stewart was about to be sent to jail, Run-DMC was killed. Anticipation for Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets was building and Avril Lavigne was "Complicated"
and one slightly off center woman decided her personal blog was getting overrun with stories of kittens and so she created "Tails from the Foster Kittens"
Yup. I am celebrating my 10 year blogoversary (blogiversary? blogaversary?) with this blog.. I was actually blogging for quite some time before I started fostering in May 2002, so I've been blogging way longer than that, but this little corner of the internet is now 10 years old.
It is also that time of year when I generally like to make a donation of canned cat food to the shelter as well. Things really drop off once the summer ends, but kitties still go into heat and kittens are still coming in. Fall kittens also seem to have it worse than the first batch of spring kittens because mom is nutritionally depleted and people are looking for kittens in the spring so those 'free to a good home" kittens are snapped up right quick but the fall kittens languish and people decide to bring them to the shelter instead.
This year I thought I would tie my donation in with a fundraising / promotion of my blog. I figure I would make a donation for each comment made and use that to buy food with. I thought about partnering with Mr. Chewy, but while they were completely happy to let me buy food from them, they were all "meh" about the promotional side of it. Then I got to thinking. It would be cool if I could offer you guys a way to chip in, but again Mr. Chewy was "meh" about the whole thing, and they don't offer gift certificates. But Amazon does.
update 10/31/12 : Javi over at TeamChewy heard about my blog and my impressions when dealing with them regarding this comment-a-thon and offered to send the shelter some cat food on my behalf! Wasn't that nice of them!
But then I got to thinking I'm not a big fan of asking others to help out financially as there are a lot of groups out there who are in need. I think this would be much more fun if there were no outside money involved at all. Then HollyAnne posted on facebook and reminded me of Swagbucks! Swagbucks is pretty interesting in that they randomly reward you with .. swagbucks.. for searching with them. You can also earn swagbucks with games, promotional sign ups, watching videos, and watching their twitter and facebook feeds for free codes. When you get enough bucks you can turn them in for prizes including paypal payments and gift certificates to Amazon.com. I've actually been with them for quite some time and gotten quite a few $5.00 certificates to Amazon. By signing up through my referral link I get reward when you do.. and if you happen to earn enough for a gift certificate to Amazon and want to donate it to help buy food it is so easy to do... not that you have to nor am I even asking you do that.. but the referrals will help me earn more and I can donate more..
So anyway.. here is the fun part of the fundraiser I wanted to do. I figure I will donate a quarter for every comment on this post for the first 400 comments then a dime for every comment after that. All you have to do is comment away... I only ask that you try not to comment more then one comment in a row. I plan on running this post for a month so there is time to get the donation to the shelter in time for Thanksgiving.
So share away.. tell your friends, tell your fellow cat lovers, tell really chatty people you know.
Have fun

ReplyDeleteTen years is beyond imagining, Connie. Seriously. I didn't even know Blogger was around that far back, either. LOL. Mind you, I've had various personal web sites, including a Google site, long before I caved and went with Blogger. :-)
ReplyDeleteAnyway, here's to raising lots of "greenpapers" -- and to another fabulous 10 years of blogging about your fosters!

What a truly amazing feat! Concats! And to think of all the little ones who owe you their lives. There must be a special place in heaven for you.
ReplyDeleteHi, We noticed you left this comment on the CB - "Thanks Rene for posting about my commentathon. If anyone is reading this and has already commented, please come back and comment again!" Are you wanting bloggers to return to THIS post to leave a second comment? If so, you might want to leave a link to this post on the CB. :)
ReplyDeleteYes, we were just thinking that...if we can come back and comment again, here, a link to the specific post would be awesome! ;-)
ReplyDeleteHappy Blogoversary! 10 years is fabulous! None of us are even 10 years old!!
ReplyDeleteAnd what a great way to celebrate by having a commentathon and helping the shelters!
Congratulations on those ten years! Funny how a personal blog can be taken over by kitties. That's what happened to our mom. hehehe! Yours is one of our favorites because we love all the kittens and their great moms and the wonderful work you do fostering. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteI guess we can comment twice, so here we are. We think you are very special too for all you do for the cats.
ReplyDeleteOh WOW!!! 10 years is a lot and Concatulations on it!! We never heard of Swagbucks, but we will check it out!! Thanks for the info and hears to 400 Comments!
ReplyDeleteHowdy from your TX furiends,
Congratulations on Ten Years! You are a remarkable person to do so much for cats, you make a wonderful difference to the cats and kittens that you help.
ReplyDeleteGerry, Mungo & The Ape
Stopping by to say hi! We left a comment at a different post. We hope that counted. Purrs!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your blogoversary. 10 years wow.
ReplyDeleteHappy blogoversary!!! :)
ReplyDeletePoor little fall kittiens They do have it rougher here in the northeast. Luckily, my feral cat colony re all fixed now.
ReplyDeleteI have 8 fall kittens in my house that I'm hoping will buck that trend. Sounds like the backlog at Petco might keep the Jeffersons here until around Thanksgiving-ish. As much as I dislike the idea of kittens as holiday gifts, I'd be happy to wrap each one of them with a great big bow if they go to a fabulous forever home.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on 10 years of blogging!
ReplyDelete10 years!?!?! I'm not sure what takes more dedication: fostering kittens or blogging about them -- but congrats on doing both so well! :)
ReplyDeleteCongratulations for 10 years of kittyblogging and for fostering them (I'm sure they'd say thank you if they could).
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your Anniversary! Many more. ;D
ReplyDeleteI agree with the fall kittens situation and I'm happy to say we adopted one of those recently. We found him at the edge of the woods, no idea what happened to his litter-mates and mom.
Sadly, he lost his tail due to infection but it seems he'll grow up to be a healthy, strong kitten.
Congratulations on 10 years!! And thanks for all you do for the kitties!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful idea...
ReplyDeleteAnd Congrats on TEN big years !!
xoxo
Ten years! Many Happy Blogoversary cheers for you and a great cause! We'll tell all our friends. Purrs...
ReplyDeletehuzzah and congratulations!
ReplyDeleteCongrats Connie! Would you put in the $.25 for me and also for my kitty Oreo who usually cuddles with me in the mornings while I read the kitty blogs? I will re-comment if I have to though. What a great idea!
ReplyDeleteGreat fundraising idea and Congrats on your 10 year Blogaversary...or however that is spelled.
ReplyDeleteWahey! Another quarter in the pot!
ReplyDeleteGerry & Mungo
