Vetri Science Perio Support dental supplement for cats #sponsored

I have been a fan of some of the products sold by Vetri Science for years, and have recommended a couple of them on a regular basis. When I saw them at the BlogPaws conference I spent some time talking to them and telling them how much I like some of their products, and how I can't use some of the others because of Jack. After the conference I was contacted to see if I might like to try one of their products to blog about.

I checked out the products they were offering and looked into Perio Support to see if it was something that I might like to use. I couldn't see any reason not to give it to my cats, so I asked for that and they sent the bottle back in July.

Perio Support and a serving of raw food

While the ingredient list didn't send me screaming like a lot of products for cats do, I wasn't immediately won over by this product. The smell of this product is a bit strong, and a little bit like anise. I had a feeling that there was no way my cats would eat the food if I added this to it. Then this happened, and I was sure it wasn't going to happen..

But I figured I would give it a shot since I didn't have anything to lose but a few meals of raw food. After an initial inspection, my cats ate their food and didn't seem to have any complaints.  We continued to add the product to their meals and continued watching for any sign of rejection or stress that their food smelled funny, but there wasn't any, so we continued to use it.

My husband is the one who feeds the cats regularly since he gets up before I do and he gets home from work before I do, and when he dispenses the product he then mixes it into the food.  When I feed them, I leave it on top of the food. My cats don't seem to care which way we did it, but I was of the belief that if it made direct contact with the teeth (by being on top of the food) that it would do more good. My husband thought being mixed in would do more good. Finally instead of having the discussion with my husband I thought I would write to the company and ask, and they said it didn't matter which way that it would work equally as well sprinkled on or mixed in. So he still mixes, and I still don't.

Now I was a bit skeptical, on several different levels, the most personal of all was if my husband would remember to use it. He is such a creature of habit that if it is not in his routine, no matter how important it is to him, he will not do it. Because it is such a big bottle and it is visible, he seemed to be able to slip that into his routine and he does use it on a regular basis which is nice.

I wondered how effective it would be, which is why I am only blogging about this now. I wanted to give the product a good time to succeed or to fail on it's own. Most of my cats had dentals fairly recently when I started giving it, but I found that Twee's teeth were in fairly bad shape. I am extremely frightened to sedate her because of her history, and when I looked in her mouth and saw how dark her teeth were my heart sank.  After a couple of months I looked in her mouth again and noticed that her teeth were much lighter and there was a definite improvement. She could still easily use another cleaning, but because of this product I feel safer letting that go a bit longer and hopefully once we do it this product will keep things sparkling. (FYI, Twee would never stand for letting me take photos of her mouth, so I didn't even try)

Another plus is how long lasting this product is. We are using it on seven cats, and have been using it for about four months and we have used maybe a third to a half of the bottle.

I will say I wish the smell was better. I know the cats are not put off by it, but it bothers me that it doesn't smell all meaty. Do I want them to add chemicals or flavorants to make it smell meaty? absolutely not.. so I guess this is pretty much a whine of a complaint, but really it is the only one I have.

Dental health in cats is very important.  Most people won't even consider brushing their cat's teeth, and I have a bit of a problem doing that because my cats do not like it when I track them down and do something to them, and the only cats who regularly come to me are ones who have really good teeth. I brush them when I can, but it is not nearly as regularly as I would like. This seems to be a nice compromise between doing nothing and doing something.

  1. Wow, my human wants to give this a try! She does brush my teeth, but she is rather sporadic, and both Binga and Boodie had dentals this year, and she would like to keep all our teeth in good shape. I doubt we'd care about the scent - we are not very picky!

  3. The mom is going to look into that because she sure wants to keep our teefs in good shape. Though we do worry about the smell and whether we would like it. Thanks for the review.

  4. I have never heard of this. I don't think I would want to deal with the smell, but it sounds like a decent product.

  8. I hope the product will give a good result! We brush our boys' teeth, too, but they certainly don't like it. It's always good to do anything extra to keep teeth clean!

  11. One of my cats has terrible, awful, no-good, very-bad teeth, and I was all ready to try this product, until I went to the website and discovered that they only sell through certain vets and distributors, and there aren't any near me. :(
