So, if it walks like a duck and sounds like a duck..

Does this mean that this blog is now going to be known as Tails from the Foster Ducks?

Nooo.. it means that I have a sick kitty in my care. I brought her home in March and I had this awesome April Fools post all set in my head, and then I realized she was not doing well.

She was sneezing and it sounded a bit like she had some post nasal drip going on as well so she horks a bit like a duck would. And yes, she is pregnant, so she waddles a bit..

🐱

When she arrived she wasn't eating and it took two days and a lot of subq fluids to get her to start again. Because she is pregnant, we are limited in what we can do for her. I am doing my best to get her to eat and while she does eat, it isn't nearly as much as I would like.

She is incredibly affectionate and she has her requirements. She is not afraid to give me a warning nip if I am not patting her enough or if I am patting in the wrong place. It is gentle though, so I can't fault her that. We are working on a better way of communicating as not everyone is cool with a cat using their teeth to ask for more love.

She has an interesting thing going on with her tail as well:

This is not the first kitty I have fostered that walks around with a bottle brush tail. I have no idea why she is doing it, she generally appears happy when it goes all floofy *shrug* guess it is just a weird dialect of cat language she learned to speak.

When I first took her I was told it could be a while before we have kittens. There were some conflicting opinions when I had her into the vet for not eating so we might have kittens in a couple of days or a couple of weeks. As much as I want them yesterday, I'm okay with it being later because I'd rather that she be over her cold before the kittens show up.

So, who is she? Well, she came with the name Hedy and I wasn't originally thrilled with that name. I was going to name her April because of the whole original theme I had going on, but the more I dealt with Hedy and remembering Hedy Lamarr, I'll think I'll stick with that.

so it is official..

  1. I'm so glad for you that you have kittens on the way. I know you know pretty much everything there is to know about food and cats but those squeeze treats can be magic. Baby food is probably better quality but the squeeze things seem irresistible to many. One of my resident cats has bottle brush tail for *any* intense emotion. In fact, he floofs his tail more for happiness than any negative emotion.

  2. It's good to hear there are other cats who get bottlebrush tails when happy. Cousin Earl gets the tail and ridged back when he's getting food, which is his favorite thing on earth.

  15. I had a cat who, when he was really happy and getting lots of attention, would walk around you with his tail twitching in the same way that cats' tails twitch sometimes when they pee. I guess it was just his way of showing he was extra happy.

I have a sweet girl who constantly had the sneezing, post nasal drip and horking going on. For years we'd treat with antibiotics and such, but I was never comfortable with her constantly being on meds that didn't fix the issue. I could never keep weight on her as she wouldn't eat. The magic happened when we started using Maxidex eye drops in her nose. Somehow the anti-inflammatory was just the right thing. You know everything about cats, so I'm kinda embarrassed to even post this. But I shall do so just in case there's a slim chance that it might help.

    1. please, do not feel embarrassed at the possibility of telling me something I might already know. I would FAR prefer someone tell me something I know than risk not hearing something I don't know. Frankly, even after all of these years there is still hardly a week that goes by that I don't learn something new - and if I were more active online it would probably be daily..

I had not heard of Maxidex, but that is because it is a UK product. I have heard of the active ingredient being used in pets, but not for stuffy noses. so there is that :) with Skippy and Eli both sneezing quite frequently, I'll have to look into it. Hedy just has a URI that is most likely temporary, but if it continues it is something to think about... so thank you.

I'm so glad that I didn't insult you with my post. I'm in Canada and here it is prescribed as a human eye drop. I have a wonderful young vet who thinks outside of the box and she finally listened to me when I insisted my constantly sneezing girl was not suffering from a URI (though it did turn into that at times). She's just chronically sneezy and the drops fix that. I went from having a girl who wouldn't eat and sneezed out goop and blood to a lovely little lady who might sneeze when my negligent self has forgotten to give her the nose drops :) I totally messed up when it came to posting, so I apologize if this pops up twice
