an observational study

Many a day I chide my husband for over feeding the cats.   He worries about his Kit because she is so small and the other larger and more dominate cats eat first, and he is afraid she won't get any (I am so NOT concerned about that) and I'm constantly telling him to not give so much.  Sometimes even going so far as to cause The Crew to miss an entire meal (not an unhealthy thing to do from time to time - especially when well fed) They protest more because the routine is off and not the lack of food. When food sits around for hours in this house, you know the cats aren't hurting for food. I keep telling him he can always give them more later if they are still begging for food..

Well again the other day I reminded my husband he was over feeding and this time he ignored me.  I had recently purchased drumsticks and beef chunks for The Crew to chew on to help their teeth.  Prior to this, someone would always chew on the bones and suck the marrow out, but this time around no one was particularly interested.  My little carnivores have gone soft.  Chew their food?? Rip and tear flesh from bone?? oh the horror!

So this is what we were left with..
Look at that, bone unmolested, meat and skin still attached.. *sigh* breaks a raw feeding mother's heart..

There was one drumstick left and my husband wondered if Meira might like it.. I plopped it on top of her food and offered it to her.  She ate all around it and when I took it out of the dish so she could eat the rest of the food she basically ignored it.  She licked the food off of it a bit later, but nothing.  *sigh*  I wondered if these cats remember they are carnivores??   I decided to leave it for her and put it on a near by plate.  Either she would chew on it a little later when she got hungry or I would throw it away in the morning and this is what I found when I went to feed her this morning...
Two tiny bits of bone left.. I checked and double checked the room because I didn't see them at first.  I thought she might have dragged it off so it wasn't near her babies.. Nope, that cat ate that chicken leg and ate it all up.  Good for her.  Made me proud - although I could have done with out her putting it on the towel the kittens had been using for walking practice..

This so showed me that The Crew are spoiled puff balls.. I'm considering stopping at the butcher and getting Meira a Cornish Game hen..

  1. I sometimes worry my skinny guy isn't getting enough - but I have to agree that most of the protesting around our house is due to routine more than the hunger pains they would have me believe they are suffering. :)

  3. Way to go Meira! She's knows the good stuff when she sees he. Have you ever given your gang chicken or turkey necks? Ours also go crazy for turkey or chicken giblets, especially the heart.

I used to. It would be gnawed on and left.. Hearts come with gizzards and gizzards are "GROSS MOM!!!!" (although Meira loved them) and tossed about the house. Even tried Cornish Game hens several times.. *sigh* most of the crew grew up eating dry food and just don't know what to do with bones in general. Skippy used to, but I guess he's over fed too.

  6. When we first got Emmy and she didn't eat for the first day or so, Fred said we should toss a (live) chicken in there since she was probably accustomed to hunting down her own food. :) (We didn't, but I bet she would have loved it!)

  7. You are a braver person than I am: I take Au's chicken off the bone and "feather" it for him. I guess that's why I'm The Survunt.

  8. Are chicken bones ok for cats? I know they are discouraged for dogs. I never thought of it before as someone in the house (no names) will only eat pate! No shreds, lumps or mushed down shreds to look like pate for her!

  9. Austin is terrified of raw chicken wings! Won't go near!!! He doesn't mind if the quarry is running around covered in feathers or fur. Go figure!

  10. raw bones are perfectly OK for both cats and dogs.. In the wild if they hunted they would eat the entire animal.. they are quite soft when raw and are easily digestible..
