Frugal Friday

a few months ago PetSmart had a pretty good deal that if you bought $25 worth of their brand of litter you got a $25 gift card.  You could do this twice, so I did.

so I had $50 worth of gift cards burning a hole in my pocket.  Last week we visited PetSmart out of town to see if they had Wellness canned food (for kitties) in large cans (they don't either.  Apparently no one does) I saw they had a cat tree on sale for $70.  I also had a coupon for 15% off any purchase, and two $5.00 off any bag of their brand of cat food (dry, yes, but I feed dry to fosters so buying the $5.99 bag was irresistible)

So, for about $65 I got $50 worth of litter, $100 worth of a cat tree, and $12 worth of dry food.  what fun!

not to mention a brand new cat tree is the next best thing to cookies around here.  We haven't been able to move it from the middle of the great room because there is ALWAYS a cat on it..

The only place I can get Wellness cat food in large cans locally is Petco, and not EVERY Petco...

  3. A brand new cat tree is fabulous!

Connie, thanks for the link to catinfo.org. I've been on that site before, but she has a TON of great info, a lot of which I'm printing off right now.

Interesting that many of the supposedly higher quality grain-free canned foods actually contain more fat than protein. So it seems you take your pick of lower quality with by-products, versus supposedly higher quality food that's mostly fat.

I was encouraged that she writes she'd prefer to see a cat on a cr*ppy (my choice of word) canned diet than on a "good" quality dry. Because to get Derry off kibble, even his restricted amount, will be very, very hard. I'm going to pick up some FortiFlora from the vet today, and some grocery stored canned *for the time being*.

Right now, in his pain med stoned state, he's not tempted to eat any of the canned he usually will eat. So he's had only kibble for the past couple of days, which doesn't thrill me.

Oh, and very interesting that she writes not to focus on pH levels of the urine, etc., but the water content of the food--logically.

I wish my boys had her for a vet! Mine just wants to push the high-carb vet food and wants to put Derry on the anti-depressant amitriptyline without even trying to get him switched to all-canned. I really just wish I had a vet who really *got it*, you know?

Anyway, thanks again for the links, much appreciated.

Oh, as a final note, I also read on her site that giving pain meds for the cystitis is crucial, so that's something, at least. I've been concerned we're not doing enough for Derry, but I guess that's not the case. In my vet's favour, he is NOT interested in prescribing antibiotics willy nilly without just cause.

  4. Wow, that is one seriously popular cat tree!

Have you looked online at all for the big cans of Wellness? Some sites have free shipping over a certain price point, and since the stuff keeps for years, you can just buy it in mass quantities.
