too many little things

So, after albon, marquis paste, probiotics, pumpkin and now raw food (which is a story on its own) the kittens still have pretty lose and varying in color stools.  I'm concerned.

Lily is still grinding her teeth when she chews.  it is a horrid sound that sounds to me like nails on a chalk board.

Jordan still is rubbing her nose with her paw and squinting her eyes with out any overt signs of inflammation or discharge.

a kitten pooped outside of the box multiple times Friday to Saturday night.

they are eating, they are active and playful, but I'm concerned with the variety of symptoms.  So I wrote in to the shelter and see what they want to do.

As for the raw...  well lets just say it wasn't what I was expecting.  Usually when I give kittens raw food they go nuts.  They get very possessive and fight each other for it.  This time Jordan got to it first and turned her nose up at it, which I think set the stage.  Bug nibbled at it, but for the most part they ignored it.  So I gave up and left them with out another option.  In the morning it was mostly gone which I'm glad for.

  1. How frustrating...maybe it takes a couple of days for their tummies to calm down.

  2. Do they run the fecal tests in-house? They could miss giardia. Have them run a giardia antigen test. If that comes back positive, here is the best treatment for it:

http://www.capcvet.org/recommendations/giardia.html (print this out and take to your vet, especially if you have to treat them again if the metronidazole doesn't get it on the first go round.

and they list the meds I used to eradicate it in my cats, info cut and pasted below

fenbendazole (50 mg/kg SID) administered in combination with metronidazole (25 mg/kg BID) for 5 days. This combination therapy may result in better resolution of clinical disease and cyst shedding.

If treatment combined with bathing (see Control and Prevention) does not eliminate infection (as evidenced by testing feces for persistence of cysts), treatment with either fenbendazole alone or in combination with metronidazole may be extended for another 10 days.

  3. Teri,

thank you so much for the information!! will definitely keep that in mind.

I wrote to the shelter over the weekend, and a vet visit is going to be scheduled. They do in house fecal testing and the results can vary by who is reading them. The shelter has seen giardia before unfortunately and I've got my paws crossed that this isn't that.... but better to have a diagnosis and treatment then not know what is going on.

    Well see.
