when good websites go bad

I love ICHC.. well, I should say I used to love ICHC.

I had a problem with them when they created their "after dark" section of ICHC, but since they kept it separate and I didn't have to see it I would just rate the posts about it as one star and move on.  But when they kept posting photos of cats in situations that would be deemed child abuse if you put a child in the place of a cat on the lolcats portion of the website I got annoyed.  Images of cats and guns, cats and alcohol and cigarettes, cats in dangerous situations..   I've complained and watched them not remove the images.. but it has been easy to overlook it because it doesn't happen all that frequently..

but the other day they posted this.. (and no, I'm not going to show it) I'm loathed to even share the link because of how offended I am by this.

The image is of a cat coming out of a front loading washer soaking wet.  He is belly up, like he is struggling to get out, and his eyes are bugged out.  The caption?  "Abort teh misshunz"

The comments range from this is so funny to this is abuse.

It makes me ache to see people think this is funny.  It hurts when they call those of us who think this is wildly inappropriate idiots or overly sensitive or tell us to go away, or that if we don't like it we don't have to be there, or that we need to get a life cause it is just a picture.

yea, and crush videos are just videos..

I'm sorry, but this is NOT funny.  EVEN if it is Photoshopped as some people would have you believe.  EVEN if it is a stuffed cat as some others suggested..

Animal abuse, like child abuse, is NEVER funny.  A cat in a washer (or dryer) is NOT funny; it IS easily fatal, and I'm pissed that ICHC hasn't taken it down.  Don't think it isn't because they don't know, as they did reply to my email saying it was inappropriate.

  1. Thank you for pointing this out. Now I realize why I don't like it either, other than being in very poor taste IMHO.

  2. I cannot follow them any longer either. Your post is heartfelt and heartwrenching...it is abuse, and just because it is just visual to those of us who look, does not make it any less vile. I just saw a music video, while the song was good, it depicted a cat getting drunk with it's owner and I don't see the humor or reason that had to be added to the video, it would have been just as good if the cat had been kicking around a catnip toy!

Love the blog. I’m fascinated with the food discussions. I’m trying to get mine off treats. The posts & product reviews are very helpful. Of course, I understand, I’m the problem. It's not like they go into the cabinet & get their own ‘candy’.
You're correct on ICHC. The photo is not funny & I won’t go back.
    Thanks for blog!

  4. I do not follow them either.
And what accounts for humor anymore has me at a loss.
Sometimes I wonder what way we are headed, but I guess each generation asks this question.

  5. I too stopped visiting ICHC a while back because the tone was not going in a direction that I could support. Too bad as it used to be light and fun.

  6. Sounds to me like ICHC has jumped the shark. I was never into that LOL cat thing anyway - I call it "kitty ebonics." We cats talk MUCH more intelligently than that! It's the humans with the lame translations.

  7. I don't usually visit them, but I won't from now on. I don't understand why they didn't take it down. I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one that complains about things. I bet Google and Amazon are tired of hearing from me!

  8. I didn't know what ICHC was for a moment! I agree, even if "no cat was harmed. ." it puts out a very bad signal!

  9. I agree. That image was disturbing and not funny at all, whether real or staged.

  10. I so agree with you about ICHC, I used to get their emails but found I was becoming offended, even occasionally being too much, and if I made a comment about the photo in a negative way, I was the bad one. I don't like visuals even if Photoshopped that even vaguely suggest that an animal has been harmed.
