Jordan

Well I guess my "break" from fostering is officially over.  I said to myself that I would not go asking for kittens, and when they called they called.  I thought I would have a few more weeks, and I would be able to change out the floor in the kitten room, but it was not meant to be.  Heck, I still haven't cleaned in there from Peter and Tinsel.

So when I got the call, I was a little hesitant.  I figured I'd call back and figured they would have found a home since the time they called, but they hadn't.  Turns out there is a reason for that.

Poor Jordan has been at the shelter for at least a month.  She came down with URI and it was not clearing up, so they sent her to the vet today.  The vet mistook why she was there and investigated her "swollen abdomen" and took an x-ray.  Turns out she was full of tiny kittens, and they sent her back to the shelter.  Having been at the shelter and not known to be pregnant, that means she was vaccinated, and medicated with several different types of medication, so this is not one of your cats to go into an inexperienced home.  I've been very lucky that the moms I've brought home that have been in this type of situation have come out OK.

But as I drove to the shelter it just bugged me that they wouldn't have noticed she was pregnant.

Then when I got her home and got a good look at her, I was .. well you decide which emotions you feel when you see and hear what kind of shape she is in.  I know there is a lot to do, so the animals don't get an abundance of time and individual attention, but how could they have not done more???

She only has three whiskers (click to make bigger to see)

all the fur on her body is very sparse.

She is double toed, and one claw is thick and was overgown

and her feet are very dirty
She was a bit distressed at the car ride, and the new place that she wasn't allowed to walk around (I'll clean tomorrow and bring home a birthing box) so I set her up in the cage with food water litter and a clean litter box with some bedding in it for a bed.  As she sniffed around I could hear how congested she was.  Her nose is red.  Not sure is she had a raw nose pad or blood coming from her nostrils.  As she looked around, I saw all kinds of bald patches on her.  I wouldn't imagine it was ringworm, as the shelter is hyper vigilant on that matter, so I'm curious what is going on.  They mentioned she was pulling her hair out and called it nesting, but since they just found out she was pregnant this afternoon.... (moving on before I say something I shouldn't)

If you look at that shot of her body, you can see that she has most of her fur on her head and shoulders, then it gets bare.  What looks like a change in color is actually a change in texture.  The fur on her head and chest and shoulders is so soft and full.  I bet she is a beautiful cat when she gets her health back.  She looked up just as I was leaving, and I noticed a few patches missing under her chin as well.  All I can say is I REALLY hope this is not ringworm.. (She doesn't have scabs, just patches of missing fur and some serious overgrooming.  Her belly is round, but outside of that she feels very scrawny to me.  Her bones are close to the surface, but fortunately you can't feel every spike in her spine, so there is some padding.  She breaks my heart.

I can't tell you how badly I want to give her a bath. I am going to try to wait a few days to get her more comfortable here and with me.  She has got to be the most pathetic cat I have seen outside of the 20 yr old sick one they found abandoned with a shaved leg (meaning the kitty recently saw a vet and had care) ... well and Shell

SO there is an x-ray out there that says she is "about ready to pop" so hopefully it won't take 30 days this time.

It almost sounds like Jordan was meant to make her way to you. She found a safe, caring place where she can get healthy and bring her babies into this world.
